Executive Project Management Tools

Over the years, my company has collected feedback and requirements from many business users seeking project management tools. We found that:

1. Most business users in non-engineering or non-technical positions find traditional project management tools complex and too technical. When I refer to business users I mean folks in management positions, executives, directors, admin assistants, marketing, sales etc. and in non-technical industries like Banking, Insurance, Services etc. Word and Excel are the extent of most of what they are comfortable using. Also, they are typically very busy and have no time or are unwilling to go through extensive training.

2. Collaboration, high level visibility into project status and an easy way to share data within a team are the core benefits they care about.

3. Gantt charts and schedules are nice to haves and not core features, which they find are core in most tools. In other words, although they want to see a schedule or a Gantt chart, they perceive those as other reports to access when needed, whereas in most traditional PM tools, they constitute the core User Interface. They prefer user interfaces that are dashboard like, intranet like, collaborative and enable them to configure the UI.

4. Ease of use and intuitiveness is what they care about most.

5. They like to have control over the tool, i.e. they want it to adapt to their needs and processes and not the other way around. Many of the "off-the-shelf" solutions only provide that capability if you know how to code and they don't, nor do they want to, learn.
